The new iteration is engineered to search vast enterprise data repositories, draft documents, and execute tasks autonomously on behalf of employees, signaling a major push to embed advanced AI capabilities directly into the workflow.

The newly available Slackbot, rolled out to Business+ and Enterprise+ customers, represents Salesforce's most ambitious effort to establish Slack as a central hub for the emerging field of "agentic AI." This paradigm shift involves software agents working collaboratively with human users to tackle complex, multi-step processes. The launch underscores Salesforce's commitment to demonstrating the value and resilience of its AI-infused product offerings, particularly as the company seeks to reassure investors about its strategic direction amidst rapid advancements in artificial intelligence that threaten to disrupt existing software models.

Parker Harris, Salesforce co-founder and Slack's Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the transformative nature of the new Slackbot in an exclusive interview. "Slackbot isn't just another copilot or AI assistant," Harris stated. "It's the front door to the agentic enterprise, powered by Salesforce." This vision positions Slackbot not merely as an add-on but as a foundational element for a new generation of AI-driven business operations.

From Tricycle to Porsche: A Ground-Up Reimagining of Slackbot

Harris vividly illustrated the magnitude of the upgrade by comparing the old Slackbot to a "little tricycle" and the new version to a "Porsche." This analogy highlights the fundamental architectural and functional differences. The original Slackbot, a fixture since Slack's inception, performed rudimentary algorithmic functions like reminding users about document additions, suggesting channel archives, and relaying simple notifications. In stark contrast, the new Slackbot operates on a completely redesigned architecture. It leverages a sophisticated large language model (LLM) and advanced search capabilities, granting it access to a wide array of enterprise data sources, including Salesforce records, Google Drive files, calendar information, and years of historical Slack conversations.

"It's two different things," Harris elaborated. "The old Slackbot was algorithmic and fairly simple. The new Slackbot is brand new — it's based around an LLM and a very robust search engine, and connections to third-party search engines, third-party enterprise data." Despite this radical technological overhaul, Salesforce opted to retain the familiar "Slackbot" brand. "People know what Slackbot is, and so we wanted to carry that forward," Harris explained, recognizing the value of brand recognition in user adoption.

Under the Hood: Claude Powers Slackbot, with More AI Models on the Horizon

The new Slackbot is initially powered by Claude, Anthropic's advanced large language model. This choice was significantly influenced by compliance requirements, particularly Slack's need to adhere to FedRAMP Moderate certification for its U.S. federal government customers. According to Harris, Anthropic was the "only provider that could give us a compliant LLM" during the initial development phase. However, Salesforce is not planning to remain exclusively tied to one provider. "We are, this year, going to support additional providers," Harris confirmed. He highlighted Google's Gemini as a highly capable alternative, noting its "incredible performance" and "great cost," and indicated it would be integrated for certain functionalities. OpenAI's models were also mentioned as a possibility, reflecting a strategy of embracing a multi-model approach.

Harris echoed Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff's perspective on the commoditization of LLMs, likening them to "CPUs" – essential, ubiquitous processing units. This view suggests that the core AI models themselves are becoming less of a differentiator, with the real value lying in their integration and application within enterprise workflows.

Data Privacy: Salesforce Assures No Customer Data Training

Addressing the critical issue of data privacy and model training, Harris was emphatic. He confirmed that Salesforce does not train its AI models on customer data. "Models don't have any sort of security," he explained, illustrating the risk with a hypothetical scenario: "If we trained it on some confidential conversation that you and I have, I don't want Carolyn to know — if I train it into the LLM, there is no way for me to say you get to see the answer, but Carolyn doesn't." This firm stance is crucial for building trust with enterprise clients who handle sensitive information.

Internal Rollout Yields Remarkable Adoption and Satisfaction Rates

Salesforce conducted extensive internal testing of the new Slackbot, deploying it to all 80,000 employees over several months. The results, according to Ryan Gavin, Slack's Chief Marketing Officer, were "striking." He reported that it has become "the fastest adopted product in Salesforce history." Internal data reveals that two-thirds of Salesforce employees have tried the new Slackbot, with a significant 80% of those users continuing to engage with it regularly. User satisfaction rates soared to 96%, the highest ever recorded for an AI feature shipped by Slack. Notably, employees reported saving between two and 20 hours per week, demonstrating a tangible productivity boost.

The rapid adoption was largely organic, fueled by employee enthusiasm. Gavin shared an anecdote: "It was about five days, and a Canvas was developed by our employees called 'The Most Stealable Slackbot Prompts.' People just started adding to it." This user-driven initiative underscores the immediate perceived value and utility of the new AI agent within the organization.
