The Egyptian General Authority of Meteorology (GAM) has issued a detailed forecast for Monday, February 23, 2026, warning of a rapid state of atmospheric instability expected to affect most parts of the country. The forecast includes a significant drop in temperatures, chances of varying intensity rainfall, and notable wind activity that could lead to sand and dust storms in certain regions, prompting citizens to exercise caution.

Significant Drop in Temperatures Across Egypt

According to the GAM's statement, cold to very cold weather is anticipated during the early morning hours across most areas, particularly in the northern regions. Throughout the day, temperatures are expected to remain cool in the north, while the southern parts of the country will experience relatively warmer conditions. However, as night falls, temperatures will sharply decline again, leading to cold to very cold weather across most regions. This necessitates wearing heavy winter clothing, especially for children and the elderly, to mitigate the effects of the chill.

The Authority indicated that this temperature drop would be widespread, affecting most governorates. The expected maximum and minimum temperatures are as follows:

  • Northern Coasts: Ranging between 16 and 17 degrees Celsius.
  • Greater Cairo and Nile Delta: Ranging between 19 and 20 degrees Celsius.
  • Southern Egypt: Ranging between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius.

This decline is attributed to the influence of cold air masses associated with the prevailing unstable weather conditions.

Varying Intensity Rainfall Expected Widely

The meteorological forecast predicts chances of rainfall of varying intensity over vast areas of the country. Moderate, sometimes heavy, rains are expected in parts of the Northern Coasts and the Nile Delta, potentially accompanied by thunder at intermittent periods. This necessitates vigilance against possible water accumulations on streets and roads.

Rain chances will also extend to Greater Cairo and Northern Upper Egypt. Light to moderate rain is expected in the evening over parts of Greater Cairo, Canal cities, North and Central Sinai, as well as areas of Fayoum and Beni Suef. These rains could intensify and become thundery at times in some areas, with an approximate probability of 30%. This highlights the need for caution while driving and avoiding low-lying areas.

Active Winds and Potential Sand/Dust Storms

In addition to rain and falling temperatures, the Authority has warned of active winds across most regions, which will significantly increase the perception of coldness. These winds may also stir up sand and dust in parts of Southern Egypt, the Red Sea Governorate, and the Western Desert. Such activity could lead to a deterioration in horizontal visibility on some desert and open roads, especially in the mentioned areas. Vehicle drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution, and it is preferable to avoid unnecessary travel in these regions during peak wind activity hours.

The General Authority of Meteorology emphasizes the importance of following regular weather bulletins and updates, and taking all necessary precautionary measures to cope with these rapid weather fluctuations. It is advisable to wear heavy clothing, avoid direct exposure to cold air currents, and drive with extreme caution on highways, especially those that may experience reduced visibility due to dust or heavy rain. The Authority also urges citizens to be careful when engaging in outdoor activities and to stay away from light poles and billboards in case of strong winds.
