Netanyahu Declares Israel 'Stronger Than Ever' Amidst Intense Regional Conflict and Political Scrutiny
In a recent assertive address, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu proclaimed that his country is experiencing an unprecedented surge in strength, even as it continues to wage a concerted military campaign against Iran, in close coordination with the United States. Netanyahu claimed that this sustained offensive has delivered 'heavy blows' to Tehran over nearly two weeks of attacks, fundamentally altering the regional landscape.
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday, Netanyahu offered what he described as specific details of Israeli strikes, alleging that they had resulted in the deaths of top Iranian nuclear scientists and inflicted severe damage upon the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Basij forces. With a defiant tone, Netanyahu asserted, "Iran is no longer the same Iran," claiming that attacks launched on February 28 had successfully thwarted Iran's intentions to move its nuclear and ballistic projects underground, signaling a significant intelligence and military triumph.

When pressed on the status of prominent Iranian and Lebanese figures, specifically Iran's newly-elected supreme leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, and Hezbollah’s leader Naim Qassem, Netanyahu unequivocally stated he would not offer any 'life insurance' on either figure. He characterized Khamenei as a "puppet of the Revolutionary Guards" unable to appear in public, citing a supreme leader's statement that was reportedly read on state TV by a news anchor, implying a perceived weakness within the Iranian leadership.
Addressing Iranian citizens who have recently taken to the streets to protest their government, most notably in January, Netanyahu expressed Israel's solidarity, stating: "We are standing by your side." He added, however, that the ultimate responsibility lay with them: "But at the end of the day this is up to you, it’s in your hands." These remarks echo previous calls from former US President Donald Trump, who repeatedly urged Iranians to rise up and overthrow their government, declaring that the "hour of their freedom is at hand."
The Israeli prime minister also underscored that the ongoing conflict with Iran had paradoxically enabled his country to forge new regional alliances. "This would not have been possible in the past but now we are doing our best," he stated, hinting at a potential realignment of geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East, likely referring to Gulf nations wary of Iranian influence.
Concurrently, Iran has launched its own drone and missile attacks on Gulf countries, disrupting operations at several oil terminals and significantly eroding the perception of security in the region. While Iran has defended its strikes, maintaining that they exclusively target US assets, its neighbors contend that these attacks have severely damaged regional trust for the foreseeable future. The United Nations Security Council, on Wednesday, adopted a draft resolution sponsored by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) unequivocally condemning Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries and Jordan, demanding an immediate cessation of hostilities from Tehran.
In a related development, Israel had previously sought to normalize ties with Gulf countries through the Abraham Accords in September 2020. However, diplomatic relations have visibly soured against the backdrop of Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza, which some have controversially labeled a 'genocidal war,' casting a long shadow over any prospective regional rapprochement efforts.

Reporting from Ramallah, Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh suggested that Netanyahu’s news conference served as an attempt to "repackage the narrative about the war" to portray Israel as victorious, strategically positioning himself for parliamentary elections later this year. Odeh observed, "Netanyahu thought he would be gaining popularity, setting himself up for another victory in the elections scheduled for November, but that is not happening." She further noted, "The latest polls that came out just as he was speaking saw him losing a seat." Moreover, while Israel’s military censor prohibits coverage of incoming missile or drone attacks on Israel, those who have witnessed the destruction firsthand have expressed profound frustration over the perceived lack of media coverage, Odeh added, highlighting a growing disconnect between official narratives and public experience.
