As a young HR professional in his mid-twenties, Martin witnessed behavior he characterized as 'crass and cruel.' When Martin interjected, arguing that termination without cause was unwarranted, the manager was unyielding.

In a final attempt to appeal to the manager's humanity, Martin pleaded, "Well, he has a family for Pete’s sake. Have some compassion." The manager's response was stark and chilling: "F compassion." Martin remembers his shock that someone could utter such words with a straight face. This harsh encounter served as a powerful catalyst for him to fundamentally re-evaluate his life's trajectory.

The Spiritual Call: Thomas Merton's Influence

Following this jarring experience, Father Martin returned home one night and watched a documentary about Thomas Merton, the Trappist monk and spiritual writer. The documentary arrived at a critical juncture, offering him a vision of monastic life and priesthood that seemed to provide an answer to the search for meaning and purpose he had been feeling. Martin playfully describes this moment as a genuine turning point, quipping that his "life was changed by TV."
