Its capabilities represent a significant leap forward in automating complex coding tasks, promising to accelerate development cycles and enhance output quality. However, its pricing model—ranging from $20 to $200 per month depending on usage—has ignited a growing rebellion among the very programmers it aims to serve. Many developers, especially those working independently or for smaller startups, find these costs prohibitive, limiting access to cutting-edge AI assistance.

In response to this growing dissatisfaction, a compelling free alternative is rapidly gaining traction. Goose, an open-source AI agent developed by Block (the financial technology company formerly known as Square), offers nearly identical functionality to Claude Code. Crucially, Goose runs entirely on a user's local machine, eliminating subscription fees, cloud dependency, and arbitrary rate limits that reset every few hours. This decentralized approach is a game-changer, providing developers with unparalleled freedom and control over their AI-powered coding environment.

As Parth Sareen, a software engineer who recently demonstrated the tool during a livestream, succinctly put it: "Your data stays with you, period." This statement encapsulates the core appeal of Goose. It empowers developers with complete control over their AI-powered workflow, including the invaluable ability to work offline—even on an airplane. Such data privacy and operational independence are critical features in an era increasingly concerned with data security and reliance on external cloud services.

The project's popularity has exploded since its launch. Goose now boasts more than 26,100 stars on GitHub, the premier code-sharing platform, attracting 362 contributors and seeing 102 releases. The latest version, 1.20.1, shipped on January 19, 2026, showcasing a rapid development pace that rivals many commercial products. For developers frustrated by Claude Code's restrictive pricing structure and usage caps, Goose represents a beacon of accessibility: a genuinely free, no-strings-attached option for serious, professional work.

To fully grasp the significance of Goose, one must understand the ongoing Claude Code pricing controversy. Anthropic, the San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company founded by former OpenAI executives, offers Claude Code as part of its tiered subscription plans. The free plan, critically, provides no access whatsoever, making it an unusable entry point for aspiring or budget-conscious developers. The Pro plan, priced at $17 per month with annual billing (or $20 monthly), severely limits users to just 10 to 40 prompts every five hours—a constraint that serious developers report exhausting within mere minutes of intensive coding sessions.

Even the more expensive Max plans, at $100 and $200 per month, which offer more headroom (50 to 200 prompts and 200 to 800 prompts respectively, plus access to Anthropic's most powerful model, Claude 4.5 Opus), come with restrictions that have inflamed the developer community. In late July, Anthropic announced new weekly rate limits, further tightening the reins. Under this system, Pro users receive 40 to 80 hours of Sonnet 4 usage per week, while Max users at the $200 tier get 240 to 480 hours of Sonnet 4, plus 24 to 40 hours of Opus 4. Nearly five months later, the frustration among developers has not subsided.

The primary issue lies in the deceptive nature of these "hours." They are not actual elapsed time but rather represent token-based limits that fluctuate wildly depending on factors such as codebase size, conversation length, and the inherent complexity of the code being processed. Independent analysis suggests that the actual per-session limits translate to roughly 44,000 tokens for Pro users and a maximum of 220,000 tokens for the $200 Max plan. This lack of transparency and predictability has been a major point of contention.

"It's confusing and vague," one developer wrote in a widely shared analysis. "When they say '24-40 hours of Opus 4,' that doesn't really tell you anything useful about what you're actually getting." The backlash on platforms like Reddit and various developer forums has been fierce, with numerous users reporting hitting their daily limits within 30 minutes of intensive coding. Many have outright canceled their subscriptions, labeling the new restrictions as "a joke" and "unusable for real work," highlighting a significant disconnect between Anthropic's offerings and the practical needs of its user base.

Anthropic has attempted to defend these changes, stating that the limits affect fewer than five percent of users and primarily target individuals running Claude Code "continuously in the background, 24/7." However, the company has not clarified whether this percentage is expected to grow as AI adoption increases, nor has it adequately addressed the core concern of serious developers who require consistent, predictable access to powerful AI tools without prohibitive costs or arbitrary caps. The emergence of Goose underscores a clear market demand for accessible, transparent, and developer-centric AI solutions that prioritize user control and affordability over proprietary restrictions.
