"There's a kind of a circus show going on on social media and on television," Obama stated, pointedly avoiding naming Trump directly but leaving no doubt about his target. He elaborated on the perceived erosion of ethical standards within the political arena, lamenting, "There doesn't seem to be any shame anymore on the part of people who used to think that there was a sense of decency, a sense of propriety, a respect for the office. Right? That's gone."

He articulated that the average American would find such a depiction "deeply disturbing." It was presented in the context of claims of election fraud in the 2020 presidential election, which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden. The clip culminated with distorted images of the Obamas' faces, laughing, on ape-like bodies, dancing in a jungle setting. This imagery has long been historically associated with racist tropes used to dehumanize Black individuals.

The backlash was swift and severe. Trump faced immediate accusations of racism, with criticism not only from political opponents but also from within his own party. Republican Senator Tim Scott, a prominent Black figure in the party, described the post as "the most racist thing I've seen from this White House." He urged the President to remove it, stating, "Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House. The President should remove it."

Initially, Trump's spokesperson, Karine Jean-Pierre, dismissed the outcry as "manufactured outrage." However, the White House later removed the video, attributing its publication to an employee who posted it "inadvertently." Trump himself later claimed he had "only seen the first part and not the whole video," while also noting that the employee responsible was not being held accountable.
