Former U.S. President Donald Trump confronts a pair of concurrent crises, one a domestic infrastructure debacle, the other a precarious international standoff. He appears intent on defying the stark reality of a green, deteriorating Reflecting Pool and a war whose resolution remains elusive.

Reflecting Pool Project Mired in Failure and Cost Overruns

The renovation of the National Mall's Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. has devolved into a significant failure, with $16.4 million in taxpayer funds allocated to no-bid contracts. These contracts covered both a color coating and a new water-purification system, the latter awarded to a company linked to a Trump-campaign donor previously convicted of bribery. The pool now suffers from pervasive algae and peeling blue coating, necessitating water removal for "necessary repairs." Trump attributed the issues to vandals, yet the White House has provided no corroborating evidence. Visitors were reportedly shooed away, and at least one individual was arrested for touching the damaged liner.

Escalating Tensions with Iran Amidst Fragile Peace Talks

Simultaneously, Trump nearly derailed peace negotiations between Vice President Vance and Iranian leaders in Switzerland. Iran claimed it had once again blocked the Strait of Hormuz following clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, an action that, for what it's worth, seemingly violates the existing fragile ceasefire. While the Trump administration asserts traffic flows normally, third-party analysts report significant slowdowns. Trump publicly threatened Iranian officials, stating, "You close it and you won’t have a country," and later posted on Truth Social that he would "hit Iran very hard again" if Hezbollah was not reined in. Vice President Vance subsequently attempted to downplay these remarks, characterizing them as "trash talk" not meant to be taken literally, in an effort to salvage the ongoing negotiations.
