Høiby, who is not a direct member of the royal family but grew up within its extended circle, appeared visibly overwhelmed by the proceedings, his voice frequently quivering as he paused to wipe away tears.

He described a life characterized by extensive partying, alcohol, and drug use, explaining that these behaviours stemmed from an "extreme need for validation." "I am known for being Mamma's son. Nothing else," he stated to the three judges, emphasizing the public's perception and his own feelings of isolation. "Few can relate to the life I have led. A lot of parties, alcohol, some drugs." His emotional testimony came after the first accuser detailed her harrowing experience, alleging she was drugged during an "after-party" at Høiby's parents' home in December 2018.

The accuser recounted feelings of "betrayal and shock" upon viewing police videos years later, which she claims depicted Høiby sexually assaulting her shortly after they had engaged in brief, consensual intimacy. She had previously described a "black hole" in her memory, unable to recall the events of that night, having testified behind closed doors. The court has imposed strict media bans, prohibiting the identification of the four alleged victims and any photographs of Høiby entering or leaving the courthouse, underscoring the sensitive nature of the case.

Høiby, born four years before his mother married Crown Prince Haakon, has denied four allegations of rape and other serious charges. His court appearance followed an arrest on Sunday on suspicion of assault and wielding a knife, leading to a four-week remand in custody, from which he did not return before his statement. During his initial court appearance, he was reportedly seen shaking and received hospital treatment overnight, indicating the immense psychological toll the situation is taking.

The trial takes place against a backdrop of significant public scrutiny for the royal family. Crown Princess Mette-Marit herself has been embroiled in controversy following revelations of her exchange of hundreds of messages with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein over a three-year period. The royal palace confirmed on Wednesday that the Crown Princess had postponed a private trip indefinitely, acknowledging regret and poor judgment regarding the correspondence. The public criticism, amplified by the unguarded tone of these exchanges, has intensified pressure on the monarchy, particularly as her son faces such grave accusations.

Further details emerged regarding the circumstances leading to Høiby's arrest in August 2024. He is alleged to have caused a disturbance at his girlfriend's apartment in Oslo, involving damage to property such as a chandelier and a mirror, and the brandishing of a knife. At the time, he cited long-standing mental health issues and substance abuse. A comprehensive police investigation resulted in charges encompassing rape, assault, threats, property damage, drug offences, and driving violations. If convicted, he faces a potential minimum of 10 years in prison.

The specific charges detail accusations of raping four women between December 2018 and November 2024. The prosecution alleges that the acts occurred after consensual sex, while the women were asleep or otherwise incapacitated. One charge pertains to full intercourse, while the other three involve sexual assault, both classified as rape under Norwegian law. Høiby, dressed in a dark blue sweater and beige shirt, maintained eye contact with the judges during his testimony, speaking for approximately thirty minutes without consulting his notes extensively. He did not appear to look towards the two alleged victims present in the courtroom.

During his cross-examination by prosecutor Sturla Henriksbø, Høiby contested the first accuser's account of the 2018 incident. He denied remembering taking videos and disputed the claim of brief consensual sex in his parents' basement toilet, instead stating that intercourse occurred after other party guests had retired for the night. When questioned about the woman's state of consciousness during the encounter, he adamantly stated, "I don't sleep with women who aren't awake." He admitted to filming a five-minute video of the woman in the family's basement but claimed no memory of the act itself. Pressed on how he could be certain she was awake, he expressed frustration, reiterating his lack of recollection.

Heidi Reisvang, the attorney for the first accuser, commented on the difficulty her client faced testifying over two days, expressing relief that it was concluded. "The most important thing for her was to say she was not able to resist or give consent," Reisvang stated. Høiby also criticized the Norwegian press, accusing them of misrepresenting facts and refuting reports that his mother had removed a SIM card from his phone prior to his arrest.
