Senior Russian Intelligence General Critically Injured in Moscow Assassination Attempt
Moscow, Russia – Lieutenant General Vladimir Alexeyev, a pivotal figure within Russia's military intelligence apparatus, was the target of a brazen assassination attempt on Friday morning. The incident, which saw the general shot multiple times at his Moscow residence, has sent shockwaves through the nation's security establishment and underscores a disturbing trend of escalating violence against Russian officials since the commencement of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Investigators from Russia's Investigative Committee, the nation's primary investigative body, identified the victim as Vladimir Alexeyev, the first deputy head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff (GRU), a highly secretive and powerful intelligence agency. While Alexeyev was reportedly rushed to a Moscow hospital, authorities have remained tight-lipped regarding his precise condition, though unconfirmed reports from sources allegedly close to law enforcement suggest he sustained critical injuries, including being shot in the back in the elevator lobby of his apartment building. The attack is said to have occurred around 7 a.m. on Friday.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and law enforcement agencies have launched an extensive manhunt for the unidentified assailant, who is believed to have fled the scene immediately after the shooting. A criminal investigation has been initiated, with authorities actively reviewing security camera footage and interviewing potential eyewitnesses in an effort to piece together the events leading up to and during the attack. The Russian Ministry of Defense has conspicuously refrained from issuing any official comment on the incident, adding to the atmosphere of uncertainty and speculation.
This latest assault on a high-ranking military official is not an isolated event. It follows a series of targeted killings and attacks that have plagued Russia's security and military leadership in recent months. Since December of the previous year, at least three generals have been killed in or near the capital, with the most recent high-profile assassination occurring late last year. These assassinations have raised serious questions about the efficacy of Russia's internal security measures and the protection afforded to its key personnel. Several prominent pro-war voices within Russia have publicly criticized the security services, accusing them of failing to prevent these deadly attacks.
Among the recent victims were Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the General Staff’s army training directorate, who was killed by a car bomb in southern Moscow in December. In April, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, deputy chief of the Russian General Staff’s main operational directorate, met a similar fate in another explosive incident. Furthermore, Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of the Russian military’s nuclear, biological, and chemical protection forces, died in December 2024 when a bomb concealed on an electric scooter near his residence detonated.
While Ukraine has previously claimed responsibility for some of these assassinations, Russian law enforcement officials have yet to officially link Kyiv to the shooting of General Alexeyev. The timing of the attack is particularly noteworthy, occurring just a day after Admiral Igor Kostyukov, Alexeyev's superior at the GRU, reportedly met with Ukrainian and U.S. officials in Abu Dhabi for peace negotiations. This juxtaposition has fueled speculation about potential geopolitical motives.
Adding another layer of complexity, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later alleged that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was orchestrating these assassination attempts as a means to sabotage ongoing peace talks. Kyiv has not yet responded to this specific accusation. The broader context of General Alexeyev's career also sheds light on his potential significance. Born in the Vinnytsia region of Soviet Ukraine, Alexeyev began his military service in the Spetsnaz special forces. Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he was reportedly tasked with overseeing intelligence operations within Ukraine, a role that placed him at the forefront of critical military endeavors after President Vladimir Putin allegedly sidelined the Federal Security Service (FSB) in the initial stages of the conflict.
Alexeyev's career trajectory includes involvement in sensitive negotiations. In 2023, he was part of a group of senior military officers who engaged in discussions with Yevgeny Prigozhin, the late leader of the Wagner private military company, during his armed mutiny against the Defense Ministry. This mutiny stemmed from deep disagreements over the management of the Ukraine war. Prior to the 2022 invasion, Alexeyev was instrumental in coordinating Russian military campaigns in both eastern Ukraine and Syria during the mid-2010s. He has held his current position as first deputy head of the GRU since 2011, overseeing a crucial intelligence agency that answers directly to the Minister of Defense and the Chief of the General Staff.

Beyond Russia's borders, Alexeyev has also faced international scrutiny. The United States previously imposed sanctions on him for alleged involvement in cyber operations targeting the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The European Union has also reportedly enacted sanctions against him. The attempted assassination of such a high-profile intelligence official within the heart of Moscow raises profound questions about internal security vulnerabilities, the escalating nature of the conflict's shadow war, and the potential for further destabilization within Russia's leadership ranks.
