Romania has been thrust into a fresh wave of political turmoil after the Social Democrats (PSD) initiated a move to oust Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The party, a crucial partner in Bolojan's governing coalition, overwhelmingly voted to withdraw its support for the premier, accusing him of implementing an austerity program that has severely damaged the country's economy and significantly increased the cost of living for its citizens. PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu vehemently stated that the party could no longer tolerate the destruction of its social base under Bolojan's leadership.

Prime Minister Bolojan, who leads the center-right National Liberal Party, has firmly rejected calls for his resignation. He publicly criticized the Social Democrats for "cowardly running" from shared governmental responsibilities, asserting that their actions jeopardize national finances and destabilize the country amidst regional conflicts and a stagnant European economy. A motion of no confidence is anticipated in parliament next week, with reports indicating the PSD's threat to withdraw six of its ministers from the cabinet, signaling an impending government collapse. This crisis follows a controversial 2024 presidential election annulment and highlights deep-seated political animosities within the fragile coalition.
