Reds Ace Hunter Greene to Undergo MRI for Right Elbow Stiffness

The Cincinnati Reds' spring training preparations have been overshadowed by a concerning development involving their highly touted ace, right-hander Hunter Greene. Greene has been forced to leave the Goodyear, Arizona facility due to experiencing stiffness in his right elbow, a situation that immediately raises red flags for the team and its fanbase heading into the new Major League Baseball season.

Manager Terry Francona and president of baseball operations Nick Krall confirmed the news to reporters on Wednesday. They announced that Greene would be traveling to Cincinnati to undergo a comprehensive MRI scan to ascertain the extent of the issue. Adding to the medical attention, Greene is also slated to be examined by Dr. Timothy Kremchek, the Reds' own orthopedic consultant. In a move underscoring the seriousness with which the team is treating this situation, Greene will also consult with Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the head team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, a renowned specialist in treating elite athletes' injuries.

Greene, widely expected to be the cornerstone of the Reds' pitching rotation, had dedicated significant effort during the offseason to enhance his physical conditioning. His routine included incorporating more lower-body work, a strategic decision aimed at bolstering his overall durability and mitigating the risk of injuries, particularly to his throwing arm. This proactive approach, however, has unfortunately not prevented the current elbow discomfort.

The statistical record from Greene's previous seasons paints a picture of a dominant pitcher when healthy. Last season, he posted an impressive 7-4 record with a 2.76 earned run average (ERA), playing a crucial role in the Reds' successful bid to secure an NL wild card spot, marking their first playoff appearance since 2020. His elite velocity was a hallmark of his game; his average four-seam fastball velocity of 99.5 mph led all of MLB among pitchers who threw at least 1,250 pitches. Despite his dominance, his season was curtailed, limiting him to a career-low 19 starts and 107.2 innings pitched. Nevertheless, his ability to unleash high-velocity pitches remained evident, with 296 pitches recorded at 100 mph or higher, placing him second in the majors behind Mason Miller's 422 such fastballs.

This is not the first time Greene has battled physical ailments. Last season, he was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 9 with a right groin strain. He managed a return on May 23 and made three starts before succumbing to the same injury, which landed him back on the injured list. His return from that setback was delayed until August 13.

Now 26 years old, Greene is entering his fifth big league season. In what was considered a breakout year in 2024, he earned his first career All-Star selection. During that season, he achieved a 9-5 record with a 2.75 ERA across 26 starts, striking out 169 batters in 150.1 innings. Notably, even during that successful campaign, he experienced elbow soreness that led to time on the injured list, adding another layer of concern to the current situation.

The potential absence or limited capacity of Greene poses a significant challenge for the Reds. His role as the team's ace is critical for their aspirations of competing in a tough National League. The results of his upcoming MRI and subsequent medical evaluations will be pivotal in determining his immediate future and the team's strategic planning. In the interim, the Reds' coaching staff will need to devise strategies to compensate for the potential loss of their top arm, focusing on maintaining their competitive edge throughout the demanding MLB season.
