Morrissey Abruptly Cancels Valencia Gig Citing Sleep Deprivation from Noise
The acclaimed British singer-songwriter Morrissey, 66, has abruptly canceled a concert that was slated to take place in Valencia, Spain, on Thursday. The reason cited for the cancellation was the inability to sleep due to excessive noise emanating from the city, which is currently in the throes of its traditional Fallas festival. This event, known for its vibrant and often loud celebrations, has drawn significant attention to the impact of ambient noise on artistic performances.
According to a statement released on the former Smiths frontman's official website, Morrissey had traveled from Milan to Valencia. However, upon arrival, he found it impossible to rest. "Any form of sleep or rest during the night was impossible due to the noise from the festival/techno music at full volume/megaphone announcements. This experience has plunged Morrissey into a catatonic state," the statement detailed, painting a vivid picture of his distress.

The statement further clarified that the cancellation was not a matter of the artist's unwillingness to perform but rather a consequence of circumstances beyond his control. "The show planned for tonight in Valencia has become impossible due to lack of sleep," the singer's website declared, emphasizing the direct link between the noise and his decision.
Attempts by Agence France-Presse (AFP) to reach the concert venue, Palau de los Artes, for comment were unsuccessful on Thursday morning, adding a layer of mystery to the situation. The incident has reignited discussions about noise pollution in Spanish cities, particularly during major festivals like Fallas, which typically attract over a million people and are characterized by fireworks, music, and public gatherings.
Morrissey, a staunch vegetarian, has a history of making specific demands at his concerts, including ensuring venues are entirely vegetarian-friendly. He famously walked off stage at the Coachella festival in California after detecting the smell of barbecue. His public persona has also evolved, with him adopting increasingly controversial political stances in recent years, including appearing on an American show in 2019 wearing a badge of a far-right British political party.
Furthermore, the singer has a reputation for frequently canceling concerts, much to the dismay of his fanbase. Statistics compiled by the specialized website "weheartM.com" indicate that Morrissey canceled 38 out of 84 scheduled dates between early 2025 and the end of January 2026. This pattern of cancellations has led some critics to question the sustainability of his touring schedule.
The Fallas festival in Valencia is a major cultural event in March, celebrated for its enormous papier-mâché figures, which are paraded and then burned in massive bonfires. The festival is renowned for its continuous firecrackers, fireworks, and loud music, creating an intense sensory experience that defines the celebration but can also be overwhelming.
