Montreal experienced a harrowing shooting incident on Monday at a Hilton hotel in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, resulting in three fatalities: a police officer, a civilian, and the assailant, who was fatally shot by responding officers. This tragic event marks the first time in 24 years that a Montreal police officer has been killed in the line of duty, an occurrence Police Chief Fady Dagher described as "a nightmare."
Investigation into Motive and Casualties
Authorities are intensely investigating the shooter's motives. Reports from Radio Canada indicate the gunman released a "manifesto against women," aligning with the violent, misogynistic views often associated with the "incel" subculture. Québec’s Domestic Security Minister Ian Lafrenière stated the incident is currently being treated as a "domestic case" rather than a terrorism investigation, for what it's worth, suggesting no broader links have been established. A second officer sustained serious injuries but remains in stable condition, while another civilian suffered minor wounds. The identity of the individual responsible for the civilian death remains undetermined, prompting an independent review by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), which has assigned ten investigators to the case.

The alert was lifted after the suspect's death was confirmed.
