Key Immigration Official Resigns Amid Scrutiny

Acting Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Todd Lyons, will resign from his post at the end of May, Homeland Security Secretary Markraquoine Molien announced Thursday. Lyons, a veteran official, was tasked with overseeing the Trump administration's mass deportation strategy in his acting capacity, placing him under intense scrutiny.

Scrutiny Over Deportations and Detentions

The agency has faced significant criticism over its increased arrests over the past year and a number of high-profile incidents, including a shooting involving federal agents and deaths within ICE detention facilities. Lyons' tenure has been marked by these challenges.

Molien Praises Lyons, Future Leadership Uncertain

Secretary Molien described Lyons as a "great leader" and a "key player" in removing dangerous individuals from American communities. Lyons' last day is scheduled for May 31. It remains unclear who will succeed him, as ICE has been without a Senate-confirmed director since the Obama administration.

Testimony Before Congress

The announcement followed Lyons' testimony before a House subcommittee earlier on Thursday, where he addressed lawmakers' questions regarding the unprecedented number of deaths in ICE custody and the agency's future detention capacity plans.
