Google and Samsung, in a notable collaboration with South Korean luxury eyewear label Gentle Monster, unveiled new Android XR smart glasses during Google I/O 2026. This partnership aims to redefine wearable technology by prioritizing aesthetics alongside advanced features, with the glasses expected to hit the market later this year. It's fair to say, style has finally taken center stage.

A Fashion-First Approach to Wearables
This initiative represents a significant shift in how Silicon Valley approaches wearable AI. Moving beyond mere utility, Google and Samsung acknowledge that visual appeal is paramount for mainstream adoption. The new glasses feature slim oval-shaped black frames and narrow tinted lenses, fully embracing Gentle Monster's signature aesthetic: sleek, slightly futuristic, and undeniably fashion-forward. They intentionally resemble Y2K-inspired eyewear popular on runways and among celebrities, rather than conspicuous tech gadgets.
Technology Meets Trend
While design is the primary focus, the glasses are packed with smart capabilities. They include built-in speakers, microphones, and a camera, enabling wearers to listen to music, take calls, snap photos, and interact hands-free with Google's Gemini AI assistant. Juston Payne, Senior Director of Product Management for Android XR at Google, articulated this philosophy, stating, "We believe that for intelligent eyewear to become part of people's daily lives, it first must be great eyewear." This contrasts sharply with earlier attempts like Google Glass, which often struggled due to their alienating appearance.
