Extreme weather phenomena are affecting various regions globally, with southern China bracing for potential widespread flooding due to torrential rainfall. Concurrently, India is experiencing severe heatwaves, and central Canada is gripped by unseasonably cold temperatures.

Heavy Rains and Flood Preparedness in Asia

Southern China is currently experiencing widespread heavy rain, with rainfall totals expected to exceed 100mm across Guangxi, Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces by Wednesday. Some areas could see as much as 150-200mm. In response, the Office of the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters and the Ministry of Emergency Management have held meetings with meteorological and hydrological departments. They emphasized reinforced patrols and emergency responses to mitigate probable flooding. Reservoirs with safety concerns are mandated to remain empty during this period and the upcoming rainy season. Torrential rain is also forecast for Bangladesh, northern Myanmar, and the far east of India, including Nagaland, Manipur, and Assam, with up to 250mm expected, and locally over 400mm.

Heatwaves in India and Cold Snap in North America

Central and northern India continue to face particularly high temperatures, with maxima of 45C reported from Surat to Haryana, Delhi, and Odisha. Combined with high humidity and extreme UV levels, several yellow heatwave alerts have been issued, expected to last into the early week before cooler air and potential thunderstorms bring relief. Separately, heavy rainfall in Nigeria recently caused widespread damage and destruction in Jalingo due to poor drainage. Meanwhile, central western Canada, including Calgary, Edmonton, and Saskatoon, is experiencing unseasonably cold weather, with daytime maximums below freezing and up to 15C below normal for late April. Minimums of -10C to -12C have been recorded, bringing snow to the region and northern US states like Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. Warmer conditions are anticipated later this week in Canada, as the colder air shifts to the southern and eastern US states.
