Khaleed Oladipo's family, originally from London, expressed their profound grief and devastation at his loss. In a heartfelt tribute, they described him as "a good boy who loved his family" and conveyed their incomprehensible sadness. "We cannot begin to put into words how sad we are to have lost Khaleed," the family stated. "We believe he was on his way home to watch the [football] game later that night when he was stabbed and killed." Football was a central passion for Khaleed, a devoted Arsenal supporter, making his untimely death even more poignant for his loved ones. The family also extended their gratitude to members of the public who attempted to assist Khaleed, as well as to the ambulance service and hospital staff who "did all they could to try and save him."
Further emphasizing their commitment to justice, the family added: "We are also really grateful to the police for their efforts in the investigation so far to ensure the person responsible is brought to justice. We are struggling to understand why anyone would do this. We know getting justice for Khaleed will not bring him back but we will make sure that he gets the justice he deserves." This powerful statement underscores the deep anguish and the unwavering desire for accountability that permeates families affected by such violent crimes.
Emergency services were called to Oxford Street, near the junction with Bonners Lane, just after 5:00 PM GMT on Tuesday, following reports of a man having collapsed. Despite immediate medical attention, Oladipo’s life could not be saved. To facilitate the ongoing investigation and evidence collection, several key roads around the incident site were closed, including Infirmary Road, Oxford Street, Infirmary Square, Carlton Street, York Road, Lower Brown Street, The Gateway, and Gosling Street, causing significant disruption but ensuring thorough police work.
Professor Katie Normington, Vice-Chancellor of De Montfort University, conveyed her deep sorrow, stating she was "devastated" by Oladipo's death. She confirmed that direct support is being offered to students, staff, and Oladipo's grieving family, emphasizing the university's commitment to pastoral care during this incredibly difficult period. "Our thoughts are with everyone who is affected by what has happened," she added. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the broader issue of knife crime in the UK and its devastating impact on young lives and academic communities, prompting renewed calls for preventative measures and community engagement.
