Powerful Quake Hits Japanese Coast

A strong earthquake measuring 7.5 on the Richter scale struck off the northeastern coast of Japan on Monday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Following the tremor, the agency issued urgent warnings for potential tsunami waves reaching up to 3 meters (9.8 feet) in height.

Tsunami Alerts and Evacuation Orders

The JMA issued tsunami warnings for Iwate Prefecture, as well as parts of Hokkaido and Aomori prefectures, forecasting waves of up to 3 meters. In other areas of northeastern Japan, advisories indicated the possibility of tsunami waves reaching one meter (3.3 feet). The earthquake's tremors were felt in Tokyo, with footage showing offices shaking in the capital.

Response Efforts and Damage Assessment

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi urged residents in warned areas to evacuate immediately to higher ground or designated evacuation sites. She stated that authorities are working diligently to assess damage, implement emergency response measures including search and rescue operations, and provide accurate, timely information to the public. The full extent of casualties and material damage is still being verified.
