Former U.S. President Donald Trump took the oath of office during his inauguration ceremony, vowing to uphold the U.S. Constitution. The ceremony, held under the Capitol dome in Washington, D.C., featured a Bible that Trump inherited from his mother. The Capitol holds special significance, as it was the site of the January 6, 2021, insurrection, when his supporters stormed the building in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election.

Inauguration Traditions

Trump arrived at the Capitol to take the oath of office administered by Chief Justice John Roberts. While inaugurations are traditionally held outdoors at the Capitol, freezing temperatures forced the ceremony indoors. Prior to the event, Trump visited the White House to meet outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden for an informal tea gathering before heading to the Capitol for the ceremony.

Trump also attended a service at the historic St. John’s Church, commonly known as the “Church of the Presidents,” located near the White House. This tradition, dating back to President James Madison, has been observed by all U.S. presidents. The church, built in 1816, is a symbol of presidential spirituality and history.

Criticism of Biden's Policies and Promises for Reform

In his inaugural speech, Trump criticized Biden’s policies, particularly regarding the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war. He highlighted his own achievements, claiming significant progress in the Middle East within three months, such as brokering a ceasefire in Gaza and securing the release of hostages. Trump pledged to swiftly end the Russia-Ukraine conflict if given the opportunity to lead again.

Controversial Policies

Trump condemned Biden’s pardons of former Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, former White House Chief Medical Adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci, and members of the January 6 investigation committee, calling the actions "disgraceful."

An official from Trump’s incoming administration announced plans for an executive order to redefine federal recognition of gender as strictly male or female. The order would also aim to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs within federal agencies, signaling a sharp shift toward conservative policies.

Returning to the political arena after years of controversy, Trump is poised to implement sweeping reforms to reshape the federal government’s priorities both domestically and internationally.
