Ramallah, Palestine – Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has officially called for legislative and presidential elections to be held across the Palestinian territories. The announcement, reported by the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, sets the presidential elections for early 2027 and legislative elections, also encompassing the Palestinian National Council, for November 2026. This move comes after two decades where elections were absent, leading to Abbas ruling by presidential decree.

Challenges Ahead for Election Organization

The path to these elections is fraught with obstacles. Significant concerns remain regarding the ability to conduct voting in East Jerusalem, which Israel occupied in 1967. Furthermore, holding fair elections in Gaza, which has suffered extensive damage and remains under Hamas control, presents another major hurdle. The age of President Abbas, who is now over 90, also raises questions about his potential candidacy.
