Getty Images, a prominent visual content company, announced a multi-year partnership with artificial intelligence powerhouse OpenAI. This agreement means Getty's extensive licensed content libraries will now be integrated into OpenAI's search functionalities and ChatGPT results. The collaboration aims to enrich user experiences by providing access to high-quality, verified imagery, reflecting a strategic pivot for Getty in the evolving AI landscape. For what it's worth, this move signals a growing acceptance of AI technologies within the creative industry.

Getty's Evolving Stance on AI Integration

Historically, Getty maintained a firm stance against AI companies, notably banning all AI-generated art from its library in September 2022 and later suing Stability AI over alleged copyright violations, a claim rejected last year. However, the company's strategy has visibly shifted. A year after its initial ban, Getty launched its own generative AI tool, trained on its library. Furthermore, in October 2025, it inked a deal with Perplexity AI, allowing access to its library, with specific provisions for image credit and source linking to ensure legal usage.

Enhancing Trust and Utility in AI-Powered Search

Craig Peters, Getty Images CEO, stated that "High-quality, licensed visual content makes AI-powered search and discovery more useful and more trustworthy." He added that this partnership with OpenAI underscores a shared recognition of that principle, promising "richer visual experiences to ChatGPT users." Unlike the Perplexity agreement, Getty has not disclosed whether its images will be utilized for AI training purposes under this new deal with OpenAI, leaving some questions about data usage open.
