Stoltenberg described the meeting as a 'frank and open discussion between two close friends.' He added that he understands Trump's disappointment but pointed out that many European countries provided assistance in other ways, including logistical support, air cover, military bases, and other forms of aid.
Trump's Continued Criticism of NATO
Despite the dialogue, Trump continued his sharp criticism of NATO following the meeting, writing on his Truth Social platform: 'NATO was not there when we needed them, and they will not be there if we need them again. Remember Greenland, that big, poorly managed ice ball!'
Trump had previously stated that NATO countries 'failed the test' when the U.S. and Israel went to war with Iran and did not provide aid to the U.S., according to a statement relayed by White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt.
U.S. Future in NATO
When asked if the U.S. was still considering withdrawing from NATO, Leavitt indicated that Trump would likely discuss the matter with Stoltenberg. Stoltenberg declined to comment on whether the U.S. President had stated his intention to withdraw, but affirmed that Trump was listening attentively to his arguments about the situation.
European Support for Iran's Disarmament
Stoltenberg emphasized that most European countries support the U.S. President's stance on disarming Iran of its ability to 'export chaos.' In a separate statement, leaders from several European nations welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire between Iran and the U.S., stating their governments would contribute to ensuring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
