The Mexican state of Jalisco, set to host crucial matches for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, is currently facing a troubling measles outbreak, posing significant public health challenges for local authorities and triggering warnings for international travelers. As the region prepares to welcome the South Korean national football team for its first two group stage matches, concerns are mounting over the safety and well-being of fans and athletes converging on the area.

In response to the escalating number of cases, the Jalisco Health Department issued a health alert on February 5 (local time), announcing a series of stringent measures to curb the disease's spread. These actions include mandatory mask-wearing in schools within specific zones and an expansion of vaccination campaigns targeting high-risk groups and infants. Héctor Raúl Pérez, Jalisco's Minister of Health, emphasized in a local press conference that authorities are "deploying various promotional means to inform residents about the seriousness of the problem," adding that "rapid response teams are strengthening epidemiological surveillance and striving to control the disease."

The measles resurgence in Jalisco is not an isolated incident. Mexico has witnessed a steady increase in measles cases since February of last year, initially starting in the northern state of Chihuahua. This trend aligns with a broader and alarming resurgence of the disease across the entire North American region. Last year, the United States recorded its highest number of measles cases in 25 years since its eradication was declared in 2000, while Canada also lost its measles-free status. These regional statistics underscore a concerning deterioration in public health and a decline in community immunity.

According to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and Mexican authorities, confirmed cases last year totaled 6,428, resulting in 24 deaths. This year, as of February 3, over 1,160 infections have been reported. Most alarmingly, the average weekly number of cases over the past four weeks has approached 350, surpassing last year's epidemic peak of 320 cases. Jalisco has become the epicenter of this outbreak, accounting for 56% of Mexico's total measles cases this year, as reported by the Mexican Vaccinology Society (AMV).

These figures raise serious concerns about Mexico potentially losing its measles-free status, a determination expected to be made in April by the WHO/PAHO Measles and Rubella Monitoring and Re-verification Committee. This assessment will be critical, especially as Mexico prepares to host millions of visitors from around the globe for the World Cup. Losing this status would not only impact Mexico's public health reputation but could also lead to negative economic and tourism repercussions.

With the World Cup rapidly approaching, Mexican authorities are making strenuous efforts to contain the infection. The presence of South Korea's group stage matches in Jalisco, specifically at Akron Stadium in Guadalajara, Zapopan, on June 12 and 19 (Korea time), makes it imperative for all visitors, including South Korean nationals planning to attend, to exercise extreme caution and ensure they are adequately vaccinated. The South Korean national team's base camp has also been confirmed to be in Zapopan, further highlighting the importance of adherence to preventive measures.

The current situation in Jalisco serves as a stark reminder that infectious diseases remain a global threat, even in countries that have made significant strides in public health.
