Lebanon, Israel Hold Three-Day Talks in Washington on Border Zones, Ceasefire

Lebanon and Israel have commenced three days of negotiations in Washington, centered on the operational mechanisms for "experimental zones" in southern Lebanon. These crucial talks also address arrangements to solidify the ceasefire stemming from the US-Iranian agreement previously signed in Switzerland. Lebanon's delegation comprises political and security officials, joined by Ambassador Nada Maawad, while Ambassador Yehiel Leiter leads the Israeli team, under the direct supervision of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

Lebanese Stance on Sovereignty and External Influence

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun chaired a meeting today, reviewing the outcomes of the fifth round of negotiations with his advisory team. Aoun affirmed that recent developments validate the choice of negotiation as the internationally recognized path to achieve national objectives and reclaim rights. He expressed hope that this current round, for what it's worth, proves "decisive" in securing "good for the nation and its people," emphasizing the restoration of full Lebanese sovereignty over all its territories. The President stressed that Lebanon will only accept an end to the Israeli presence in southern Lebanon and the "collapse of external tutelage," asserting that national sovereignty remains the country's sole option.

Missing Airman and US Engagement

The case of missing Israeli airman Ron Arad emerged as a side issue during the talks, with Lebanese media reporting discussions on repatriating his remains in exchange for Lebanese prisoners. Israeli officials, speaking to the Jerusalem Post, indicated no new information on Arad's fate but were open to considering any data from the Lebanese side. Separately, President Aoun received a call from US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Both US officials reiterated Washington's support for Lebanon's positions, particularly in extending state authority and reinforcing sovereignty through the Lebanese Army and official security forces, enabling the state to fulfill its obligations. Vance and Rubio highlighted ongoing US follow-up on the Switzerland understandings, including efforts to form a tripartite cell involving the US, Lebanon, and Iran to stabilize the ceasefire in Lebanon.
