Pakistan Navigates Mideast Peace Efforts
After a night where the world held its breath, Islamabad appears to have successfully defused a crisis that threatened to engulf the entire Middle East. The region had been gripped by severe tension since the United States and Israel launched coordinated military strikes against Iran on February 28, 2026, igniting a conflict with a high potential for escalation.

Intense bombing continued until early April 2026, achieving partial success. However, Iran demonstrated defiance by targeting US military and civilian objectives, as well as petrochemical and gas industries in the region.
Economic and Political Repercussions
Amidst these attacks, Gulf states attempted a strategy of restraint and patience, refusing direct involvement. Yet, the conflict's impact transcended the military, hitting the economic sphere due to Iranian retaliatory strikes and a relative decline in US deterrence. This perilous equation culminated in the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, causing a sharp surge in global oil prices, leading to severe international stock market crashes, and destabilizing the global economic system.
Furthermore, Iranian strikes against targets in Qatar, Bahrain, the UAE, Kuwait, and particularly Saudi Arabia, deepened the chasm between Tehran and the Arab world. Bridging this divide will require significant efforts to achieve regional understandings that ensure collective security.
Pakistan's Diplomatic Role
Amidst this destructive climate, Pakistan emerged as an active diplomatic force, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, spearheading efforts to de-escalate the situation. Pakistan initiated its moves by fostering a positive atmosphere for mediation, starting with several Islamic nations before extending to brokering talks between Tehran and Washington. To ensure success, Islamabad formed a regional support coalition in coordination with Turkey, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, with strong backing from China.
Pakistani diplomacy achieved a tangible breakthrough, resulting in a two-week ceasefire agreement, offering a glimmer of hope against the Middle East's slide towards another global conflict. However, an Iranian attack on a Saudi petrochemical complex on April 7, 2026, dealt a significant blow to peace efforts, casting doubt on the success of Pakistan's mediation.
Future of Regional Peace
In this complex reality, Tehran announced its refusal to continue indirect talks with the US. Among the most serious potential consequences is a large-scale US assault on Iranian nuclear sites. Despite this, Pakistani diplomatic efforts persisted, and a light at the end of the tunnel seemed to appear for a gradual cessation of hostilities.
