The twenty-third of June marks the anniversary of the passing of Sheikh Abu Al-Ainain Shuaisha, known as the "Dean of Reciters" and a pivotal figure in Egyptian Quranic recitation. He departed in 2011 after a life rich with contributions. Born in Bella, Kafr El Sheikh, in 1922, this esteemed reciter devoted nearly eighty of his eighty-nine years to serving the Holy Quran, leaving an indelible mark on millions worldwide.

A Storied Career and Early Beginnings

Shuaisha began his journey at the Kuttab at age six, memorizing the Quran before turning ten, an extraordinary feat. He joined Egyptian Radio in 1939, influenced by Sheikh Mohammed Refaat, and by the mid-1940s, he had developed his distinctive recitation style. A poignant incident in Mansoura in 1936 saw him recite before a massive crowd at just fourteen, earning widespread admiration and setting the stage for his illustrious career. For what it's worth, such early public exposure often shapes great talents.

"King of Saba" and Leadership Roles

Sheikh Shuaisha was dubbed "King of Saba" due to the profound melancholy evident in his recitation, a quality attributed to the sorrow he felt after his father's death. He became the first Egyptian reciter to perform at Al-Aqsa Mosque and traveled extensively, from Mecca to London, including Syria and Iraq, spreading the Quran's message. During the 1970s, he championed the establishment of the Quraa Syndicate, eventually being elected its head in 1988, succeeding Sheikh Abdul Basit Abdul Samad. He also held significant positions within the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and various Quranic committees, solidifying his legacy as a leader and innovator in the realm of recitation.
