Cairo Public Transport Authority Unveils Comprehensive Ramadan Operational Plan: Extended Services and Peak Hour Adjustments

In a proactive move to address the unique mobility demands of the holy month of Ramadan, the Cairo Public Transport Authority (CPTA) has unveiled a detailed operational plan aimed at enhancing public transport services and ensuring seamless movement across the capital. Engineer Essam Abdel Khalek El Sheikh, Chairman of the CPTA, highlighted that the comprehensive strategy underscores the authority's commitment to meeting the evolving needs of citizens during this special period, emphasizing flexibility and efficiency in service delivery.

Ramadan brings significant shifts in daily routines, including altered work and study hours, and an increased demand for transportation, particularly during late evening and early morning hours. The CPTA's initiative is a strategic response to these logistical challenges. The plan encompasses several key pillars: adjusting morning peak service times, extending night services, optimizing mini-bus operations, and strengthening field supervision, all complemented by effective coordination with other mass transit networks.

Adjusting Morning Peak Hours: Adapting to Ramadan's New Rhythm

A cornerstone of the CPTA's plan is the adjustment of morning peak hours. Engineer El Sheikh explained that bus lines will commence operations as usual from 5:30 AM. However, a crucial modification involves the gradual deployment of the entire fleet to cover a 'late morning peak,' which, during Ramadan, will begin at 8:30 AM instead of the regular 7:00 AM. This vital adjustment is meticulously timed to align with the altered work and study schedules prevalent in the holy month, where many individuals tend to start their day later after the pre-dawn meal (Suhoor) and Fajr prayers. This strategic shift aims to minimize waiting times and alleviate congestion during this critical period, ensuring that commuters reach their destinations comfortably and efficiently. The re-timing reflects a deep understanding of the city's pulse during Ramadan, where daily rhythms are recalibrated to accommodate religious observances and social customs.

Extended Night Services Until 5 AM: Supporting Ramadan's Vibrant Evenings

Night services gain particular importance during Ramadan, as Cairo transforms into a bustling hub after Iftar, with a surge in religious, social, and commercial activities. To facilitate access to vital religious sites such as Sayeda Zeinab, Al-Hussein, and Imam Shafi'i areas, as well as commercial districts that experience high footfall at night, the CPTA Chairman announced a distinguished night service. This service will operate from 9:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning, just before Suhoor and Fajr prayers. El Sheikh confirmed that a suitable number of buses would continue operating around the clock to serve worshippers and those wishing to enjoy Ramadan's late-night gatherings. Operating periods for some shifts will be extended to up to 10 continuous hours, demonstrating the authority's commitment to supporting the spiritual and social essence of Ramadan by ensuring convenient and accessible transportation throughout the night. This caters to the unique cultural landscape of Ramadan, where evenings are often dedicated to communal prayers, family visits, and shopping.

Mini-Bus Lines and Field Supervision: Enhancing Flexibility and Service Quality

To further enhance coverage and accessibility, Engineer El Sheikh affirmed that 'mini-bus' lines would operate at 65% of their total capacity. This focus on mini-buses is attributed to their ability to navigate inner residential areas and effectively connect them with religious and commercial zones, providing diverse transportation options for citizens. To guarantee punctuality and ensure maximum passenger comfort, the CPTA Chairman emphasized continuous and regular field supervision. This oversight aims to monitor driver adherence to schedules, verify service quality, and respond swiftly to any emergencies. Crucially, the authority reaffirmed that ticket prices would remain unchanged, mitigating the financial burden on citizens during a month when expenses typically increase. This commitment to stable fares underscores the CPTA's dedication to public welfare.

Integrated Coordination with Metro and Mass Transit: Towards Comprehensive Traffic Flow

Concluding his remarks, Dr. Essam Abdel Khalek El Sheikh stressed that the success of this plan hinges not solely on the efforts of the CPTA but also significantly on comprehensive and effective coordination with metro lines and other mass transit providers. This inter-agency coordination aims to achieve overall traffic fluidity and reduce waiting times for citizens at interchange points and major stations. The integration of these networks ensures a seamless and continuous travel experience, thereby alleviating road congestion and improving the efficiency of the entire system. El Sheikh affirmed that the authority is fully prepared with its entire operational and human capacity to serve the residents and visitors of the capital throughout the holy month, reiterating its unwavering commitment to providing outstanding public transport services that meet citizens' expectations and contribute to their daily comfort and convenience.
