Apple announced on Monday that John Ternus, a veteran hardware executive, will take over as CEO later this year, succeeding Tim Cook. Cook transformed Apple into a global powerhouse, significantly expanding its services business and overseeing historically profitable years. Ternus, however, brings a different skill set, having spent his career building Apple's iconic devices.
Ternus joined Apple in 2001 and has been instrumental in the development of key products such as AirPods, the Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. His appointment signals a strategic shift towards hardware at a time when the company is under pressure to define its next era, particularly in the realm of artificial intelligence. Rather than directly competing with companies developing large AI models, Ternus is expected to steer Apple towards focusing on AI-powered devices themselves, ranging from wearables to home-based technology.

Speculation is rife about potential new product launches, including smart glasses, wearable pendants with cameras, and enhanced AirPods with AI features, all designed to integrate seamlessly with the iPhone and Siri. Ternus is also anticipated to advance products that have been in development limbo, such as foldable iPhones, which reports suggest could launch in September. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly exploring home robotics, with concepts including a tabletop device with a robotic arm and display, and even mobile robots. However, the company faces potential challenges from ongoing memory chip shortages, shifting tariff policies, and its historical reliance on Chinese manufacturing, though it has recently begun pivoting production to India.
