Al-Azhar Grand Imam, UN Refugee Chief Discuss Boosting Refugee Rights Support

Dr. Ahmed El-Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Sharif, hosted Barham Salih, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and former President of Iraq, at Al-Azhar Sheikhdom in Cairo on Tuesday. The high-level meeting aimed to explore avenues for strengthening joint cooperation between Al-Azhar and the UNHCR in advocating for the rights of refugees and displaced persons.

Al-Azhar's Stance on Global Challenges

The Grand Imam underscored Al-Azhar's extensive efforts in supporting the rights of refugees and displaced individuals, noting that this critical issue forms a significant part of the Human Fraternity Document. El-Tayeb affirmed Al-Azhar's readiness to collaborate with all relevant institutions to raise awareness about refugee rights, stemming from its global and social role. He also reflected on the contemporary world, expressing dismay that an era once promised to be one of progress and prosperity has, for what it's worth, instead witnessed a surge in arms manufacturing and conflicts, questioning humanity's path towards moderation.

Call for Enhanced Cooperation

For his part, Barham Salih conveyed his pleasure at meeting the Grand Imam in this historic and esteemed academic institution. He praised Al-Azhar's pivotal role in disseminating values of moderation and graduating generations dedicated to promoting peace worldwide. Salih emphasized the UNHCR's commitment to enhancing cooperation with Al-Azhar to foster awareness regarding the rights of refugees and displaced persons, particularly amidst escalating pressures and a perceived decline in ethical values. He also cautioned against the dangers of technology and social media in fueling negative sentiments towards refugees, extending an invitation to the Grand Imam to participate in the 75th-anniversary events of the UN Refugee Convention.
